It was replaced by more advanced destructive materials, but even those are from the Ancient Age. The Shadow Age used reversal materials, those that revert to their components upon command.

Spyware has a different meaning for Shadow Age artifacts. They are clothing embedded with tech that spies on the wearers. This is much more advanced than what smart phones do today, everything about the person or critter wearing the clothing, from health and diet to thoughts and memories.
Just think what the Iron Society, Knights of Genetic Purity or Archivists could do with that tech.

Anti-food theft tech was used in some locations. Take the food away and it becomes inedible, toxic, or even explosive. Apparently some corporations were very serious about where certain products could or could not be sold and used.
