My memories of "Mandatory Community Mission #2", a Funball-Themed MissionNote: Mandatory Community Missions are forums where members of "Paranoia-Live" cooperate together to write a mission/supplement of their own. The first Mandatory Community Mission was responsible for creating
Viva VEG Sector!, and was so successful that a second Mandatory Community Mission forum was made. However, this second MCM #2 soon stalled and the mission was never fully completed. Wayback Machine also does not appear to have any info about this mission. This is my attempt to reconstruct MCM#2 using only my own memories.
Alice-U and Bob-U both bet on the result of Funball matches. And
this Funball match is the most important funball match of all, because it is the
Funball Championship, being held between two random teams that I don't remember the names of the
Shooters and the
Vat-Stirrers.
Alice-U has bet big money on making sure the Shooters win this match. Bob-U has also bet big money on making sure the Vat-Stirrers lose this match. Yes, there's essentially the same bet, read on.
Both Alice-U and Bob-U decide to 'rig' the match in such a way as to ensure that their respective bets pan out. Alice-U has chosen an elite Troubleshooting team composed of ex-Funball veterans and ordered them to covertly replace the Shooters, so that the Shooters are guaranteed to win. Bob-U, by contrast, chosen the worst possible Troubleshooting team (your players) and ordered them to covertly replace the Vat-Stirrers, so the Vat-Stirrers are guaranteed to lose.
They gave both mission briefings to the same briefing officer, not knowing what the other ULTRAVIOLET has did.
Meanwhile, the passion and fury of both the Shooters and the Vat-Stirrers are high, with fandoms of both sides egging each other on. Riots are commonplace. Even the more pacifist fans have clogged the corridors and the transtubes to go to the stadium, buy Funball-related equipment, or participate in fun Funball rallies - making it difficult for people to move or get around the area.
Your Troubleshooters receive the briefing in a cafeteria while watching the Pre-Game Show for the Funball Championship, and since that interrupted the Pre-Game Show, everyone else in the cafeteria look at your Troubleshooters rather suspiciously. When they escape from the cafeteria, the crowds and the riots in the corridors makes it difficult for your players, the Troubleshooters, to make it to the briefing room. So they're late.
Now, the mission briefing officer scheduled your Troubleshooter team to receive their briefing first, followed by the ex-Funball veterans. So, when the ex-Funball veterans arrive on time, the briefing officer gave them Bob-U's mission: "replace the Vat-Stirrers and lose the match".
Now, the ex-Funball veterans are prideful - they don't want to lose a match, even if they're being ordered to do so by an ULTRAVIOLET. They are also covertly Communists, who have each received their own secret society mission: "Undermine the ULTRAVIOLET capitalist pig-dogs by making sure your next mission fails." They smile. They got a plan. They're going to replace the Vat-Stirrers, alright, but then they'll rig the match to make sure
they win.
When your Troubleshooter team arrive, the briefing officer realize the mistake they did. Instead of giving them their correct mission, he sent them to the Funball stadium to find the ex-Funball veterans and bring them
back to the briefing room so that the correct mission briefings can be given to both parties. By the time the Troubleshooters make it to the Funball Stadium, the ex-Funball veterans have already beaten up the Vat-Stirrers, placed them in a closet, and assumed their uniforms. This team has gone rogue - they're certainly not going to consent to orders delivered by your puny, weakling Troubleshooters.
So the briefing officer improvised. He orders your Troubleshooters to replace the Shooters, and then rig the match so that the Shooters win, thereby ensuring that both Alice-U and Bob-U win their bets and stopping the Communists' evil plans. Note that your Troubleshooters do not know the rules of Funball, so they're going to have to improvise. Luckily, lots of other ULTRAVIOLETs have placed bets on this Championship and will also attempt to rig the match in their favor, so the Troubleshooters might take advantage of their "help" whenever possible. They should also use their secret society connections to help out, though their secret societies would certainly want them to do something in return (such as spreading propaganda, causing riots, destroying stuff, blackmailing referees, or stealing valuable Funball equipment).
An interesting end to this mission (proposed by Riche-R-ICH) would be to have the Troubleshooters win the Championship, despite all odds stacked against them. As the crowds cheer, the ex-Funball veterans sulk, and the Trophy is awarded to the Troubleshooters, both the original Shooters and the original Vat-Stirrers break out of their constraints and storm out of their locker rooms, with thoughts of bloodlust and revenge. Improvise from there.
