Does Paranoia HAVE to be comical?First time posting on this Reddit (I think? I think I may have once posted a pile of "pun-weapon" ideas on here a few years ago.... such as a Fire-Blanket that, when wrapped around a target, incinerates the target). But have a question I wanted to ask my fellow Ultra-Violets.
Does Paranoia HAVE to be comical?
The RPG design lends strongly to a comedy of errors, which I think is good, and VERY good for one-shot use. But I've been thinking, does it need be that way.
DnD is, thematically, a somewhat serious adventure fantasy game. And yet players often create moments of comedy within it.
(That said, a game like World/Chronicles of Darkness tends to be SUPER serious with almost no room for comedy given how sincere and dark the setting and danger is. NOTE I do NOT want any game of Paranoia I run to dive into THIS depth of sincereity).
So was thinking, instead of trying to create a comical effect game - is it possible to try to create a more 'sincere' mission, but to then just add one or two minor 'comical' twists along the way.
The thought comes that Paranoia could be run more like a "Logan's Run" or "Blade Runner" or "Snowpiercer", or even a "Judge Dread" (you choose which version). Comedy would still be there, and I think it needs be there to off-put the innate backstabbery of the game so its more in a solid sense of humor, but I thought I'd just ask has anyone else done this? My thinking is this could lead to longer 'campaigns' for a larger meta-story.
I do also realize I could just run a game of "Shadow Run" - which is basically cyberpunk DnD - but I am enjoying the Paranoia system. So I felt I'd get some opinions on this idea that has crossed my neurons.
Thankyou for any imput you can offer.
