Discussing Alchemy ("This is cool" goes here.) posted in Fantasy and Progress Level 3 forum comment posted by derek_holland Fantastic substances may change color (hue and pattern), texture, temperature and even structure when exposed to specific environmental stimuli. These can be replicated or fabricated with alchemy. Some examples:
The walls of gates made be made with stone that is alchemically altered so that it turns bright red in the presence of dark magic, including necromancy and mind control.
Cups and knives made of alloys that freeze pointed drink and food solid to prevent ingestion.
Suits of armor that kill their wearers if they show signs of cowardice or betrayal by forming internal spikes.
Giant spider webs that tighten and cause enough pain to prevent spell use when those caught start to cast. (Okay, this is a monster thing, but just squint and consider the spider an alchemist.)
Swords that produce blinding light in the presence of evil (which burns evil but unfortunately blinds everyone else due to poor design).
Cloth that turns a variety of patterns to assist in diagnosing diseases.
