I can try applying this to a couple of examples. |
It doesn't look as if events at Wnuzat involve anywhere off planet Tribulation yet, for which I can set
zones of Starport, Rural and Rough. I can split the Rural zone if the insurgents don't have full control of it. Let's see, when it first comes up in the news: Rural where a doomsday cult presumably arose: Revolutionaries. Starport: Independent faction, no defined population segments. That works well. In the Rural zone, the cult has: 5,000 fighters who probably have a moderate amount of guns (x 0.75) and haven't had a chance to improve those yet. Do they have anyone with military experience among their leadership? No.
The holdouts at (around) what passes for a starport have, let's say a smaller zone combat strength of 400 x 0.75. They also don't have any Tactics skill, mostly Traders in charge.
The Mercenary League can provide Noy Noy quickly with d4+1 = 5 fully prepared
mercenary cruisers, with one or the other finding an Ordinary military officer.
They starfall to Wnuzat where the cult mobs can't engage them in orbit.
Is the cult about to attack the starport? Yes. Are the mercenaries going for orbital bombardment before landing? Yes, they'll be too late to deplete or disarrange the cult's movement but land in the nick of time, actually under fire.
For orbital attack, can the cult be the attacker? They can't do any damage but maybe it's not impossible for their (lack of) Tactics to apply. Not a bad roll, but a Failure, taking 18% x 500 = 90 points to the cult's Combat Strength in the Rural zone.
Starport .. that's never going to do much, 100 x 0.75 = 75 Combat Strength vs. 300 + 850 = 1150. Let's see if they're a total loss: bad Failure on Tactics by the mercenaries, 9% x 1150 = 104 is still enough to wipe out the cult attackers, 14% x 75 = 10.5. That'll disable a cutter and injure a crew member. There was definitely a chance for a much bigger mess.
