A different origin is they are a side effect of when major fiends (archdevils, demon princes, etc.) walk the mortal plane. The elements within reality react to their presence and become minor monsters. Druids inspired by this make their own, the difference being fiend created mephits are permanent while druid created mephits return to their place of origin and merge back into the fabric of reality. In both cases, while the mephits exist, the element is weakened there. For example, Orcus walks the halls of a conquered castle and creates radiance mephits, thus reducing the effects of light within its walls. If the mephits are slain elsewhere, it could mean that light has a stronger effect there.
The presence of dwarves in wooden buildings slowly petrifies the structures. For elves underground, the result are flower-shaped crystals that grow out of the rock. What might be a similar effect for halfings or gnomes?
Some illusionists use complex illusions that appear differently to different individuals, groups or species. This could be as easy as a signal flare that is only visible to elves or as complex as interactive entertainment for a royal court.
The mane of a manticore is used to absorb metal, regrowing their spikes much quicker than normal. Specks of the last metal absorbed remain visible in the mane.
The presence of the bellwyrm causes musical instruments to play on their own. The song is dependent on the bellwyrm's mood and personality.
Many troglodyte weapons are coated in their musk. Anyone struck becomes a new source of the stench, at least until they are able to wash off in alcohol.
Some hauntings have triggers. The ghosts remain calm until enraged (or simply active) by some action or object.
There are oubliettes with escape rituals. These are placed by the creator that doesn't want to be trapped in their creation, as well as others who pay them well.
Gemstone needle and thread can be used to repair or enhance jewels.
If a wizard with a familiar becomes a shade, the familiar become blots of darkness that can alter the level of light around themselves. As long as their familiar is on hand (or shoulder), the wizard never has to worry about bright light.
