| So what does the plant do to or for the character? Download the translation "software" into their minds or act as a translator somehow? |
Well, I was trying to avoid spoilers, but...
So this plant controls its enslaved subjects via spores that create the psychic bridge, so it really isn't a great idea to just let it infect a person just to gain new information. On top of that, the big bad in the first game had negotiated with it for the information, and then betrayed it, so it really isn't interested in further negotiations.
In the end, you have to kill it, but that releases its subjects, and one of them is an asari (one of the primary species in the Mass Effect universe; they have telepathic abilities, and are mono-gendered, being all female; they are also the only species that can reproduce with other intelligent species, as they telepathically "sample" the genetics of their partner and then alter the genetics of their offspring; otherwise, it is basically parthenogenesis). This particular asari was a underling of the big bad guy, and had extracted the Cypher from this plant and then passed it on to him. Because you freed her, she passes the Cypher on to you.
