Player's Handbook starships
Player's Handbook starships (Warships stats) posted in Spaceships & Vehicles forum comment posted by uncle_jimbo I made a note some time ago to look at standard components of starships, which I could reasonably define as the ship systems used in multiple standard designs. Apart from any potential as flavour (or even adventure hooks), mechanically they might offer bonuses to locate and service them similar to the Popular Model Perk and/or discounts to purchase them at standard commercial or military procurement yards.
I'm conscious that all the designs in my resource are my work with not a little copy and paste used.
The small craft stardrive (3 Hull Points) of course serves many kinds of common vessels, as does the minimum mass reactor to power it at 3 Hull Points, which I might call a trader mass reactor.
Another mass reactor configuration that I've used more than once (partly interacting with a
variant rule of mine) has 2 x 2 Hull Points and might be called a twin-cell. The next largest stardrive for haulers and corvettes also fits classes noted in common use.
The minimum size induction engine at 2 Hull Points could be called a cutter grade and also works well for launches, couriers and yachts. The minimum regulation radio communications transceiver should be well known.
Among weapons (that I've
theorised are) easily available to merchants, the point defence gun turret and basic (CHE active radar) ship's missile fit many needs. The latter in turn might account for some of the apparent popularity of jammers for defence. Technically a weapon, I've done a lot with cable guns.
It might be worth a further look at the historical introduction of autosupport, almost a revolution in small craft operation, simultaneously halving the space and power required for life support in small craft of trader size and above, and permitting them to use induction engines (but I have some other thoughts about that). In turn this might have been a significant moment in
training and status of environmental techs. Size 1 autosupport is probably not a standard system in itself due to the wide range of operating conditions that different installations need to serve.
