Gonzo Cataclysms
Gonzo Cataclysms posted in Gamma World forum comment posted by derek_holland Spoilers for Witherwing, a novel from 1979 that I doubt many of you have heard of.
Witherwing initially appears to be a low fantasy story with a handful of monsters, some semi-human species and a few instances of magic. The last couple chapters reveals that the world is a playground for Ancients who survived a cataclysm (what sort isn't described). Their technology is extremely advanced and they are immortal- destroy one of their bodies and their uploaded mind will print a new one (and print is the term in the book). There is a lot that is either poorly or completely undescribed as this is from the viewpoint of one of their playthings, a man with a swan wing in place of one of his wings (yes, it is based on that fairy tale). Still it provides a sort of gonzo cataclysm I rarely consider.
The Ancients did it on purpose and they are still around in some form, watching and making subtle changes to the environment and people.
To make it much more weird, take 10 people you know and considered their favorite works of fiction and non-fiction (any sort of media). Use all of that simultaneously in addition to the weird effects of superscience gone amuck.
Now that is a gonzo and messy form of Gamma Terra.
