School specialisation could work something like a Perk. I think there could be several applications for game effects that are more everyday than Perks, so that a character might have a larger number of them, but are one-off purchases rather than ranked like skills. Having said that, I've seen an example in at least one D&D variant (
Pathfinder's Golarion campaign setting) and I think more, of different implementations of greater school specialisation with restrictions that might translate to skill ranks 4+, or to a more costly grade of a Perk, of which several already exist.
For abilities like low-light vision and infravision (or darkvision), I like to work with visual detection in the
GMG, page 39. Published sesheyan special abilities (
PHB, page 26) refer to these, though not in an entirely integrated way: total darkness corresponds to an Extreme condition (see also modifiers to ranged attacks) so it might be better to say that a sesheyan's Night Vision ignores Slight to Moderate, but not Extreme visibility. Similarly, an elf's low-light vision could count Slight to Moderate visibility as one step better, which more or less matches the effect of doubling visual range to combat opponents while answering some persistent questions about the D&D ability, while a dwarf's infravision could count Moderate to Extreme visibility as Slight, since infravision still has some differences and limitations. I'd probably still refer to light conditions descriptively (torchlight, moonlight or total darkness) as well.
