Dilettantes, Drifters and Desperados
Dilettantes, Drifters and Desperados (Old Space to Open Space) posted in Star*Drive forum comment posted by uncle_jimbo It sounds as if
Diverse Roles and the
Clement Sector Setting Book should have plenty that would interest me for various purposes.
Traveller careers work quite differently from
Alternity's concept. They might provide ideas in several ways:
- Enlistment, Survival and Advancement dice modifiers (DMs) from nominated ability scores might hint which Alternity profession should cover an unlisted career
- Service skills most likely translate to Alternity career skills, particularly any that are gained automatically or repeated in the table
- Advanced Education probably translates to suggested extra skills
- Muster Out benefits (I might mention one in particular) and Events might suggest new Perks, Mishaps might especially suggest Flaws, while any of these could be useful for setting development
The Cleaner career might draw a lot from The Wolf in
Pulp Fiction, with the
Nikita character showing a combination of skills (he cleans places, too). Ability scores suggest a Tech Op, with a couple of other things happening that favour Constitution in Alternity terms, maybe adding Stamina as a career skill to (essentially) Investigate, mostly
search and maybe noting special usages to confuse following investigations (then in the order published) Administration-
bureaucracy, Deception-
bluff and
bribe, Modern Ranged Weapons, most likely
pistol but others seem possible, Technical Science and lastly, Street Smart. Law, Medical Science and various other Science skills,
intimidate or
interrogate, other encounter skills, including
diplomacy with other criminal organisations which in turn suggests some
etiquette specialties, and (from the Events table) Demolitions all seem like helpful further specialisations.
There are plenty of opportunities to gain Enemies and lose material benefits. Finding religion might be an interesting turn - I might suggest from my
previous work becoming a Deacon or Missionary as likely as a clergyman, with a probable profession choice (or change, if I want to develop some mechanics for that as suggested from time to time) as Diplomat.
