They seem to grow just about anywhere in ruins, providing a ghastly source of illumination. People have discovered how to use them for power, not realizing the danger. As the crystals are drained, they crumble and release the actual source of energy- embedded powder that then contaminates the environment. And that is where the weird comes into play. It isn't a mutagen for living things, rather it warps reality and the landscape and everything in and on it are twisted as if they were funhouse mirror reflections. The powder is easy to contain, at least until the container is warped to the point it breaks...

A village of calugos is playing with fire. They have found a vault with telepresence tech that is current anchored to some incorporeal robots. They are spying on everyone in the region for blackmail material and have done well so far. Currently they are considering extorting the heroes into robbing a Created node, not knowing the machines have picked up the signals. The robots are visible and look like machines with misty parts. Most think they are robot ghosts.

Two competing oasis machines have created a death zone between their paradises. Enjoy the beach with the amazing sunsets and enough booze to kill a kraak or the beach with shells that almost break the brain with their astounding beauty. Just don't walk between them, or be turned into the booze or shells. The sight of that should give the players nightmares for a week.
