FX weilding critters
FX weilding critters posted in Species, Aliens, Xenoforms & Monsters forum comment posted by derek_holland I was looking at the research rules in Dreams of Ruin a few weeks ago and I forgot that the creatures unique to the Forest are based on spells- puppets on barkskin, bakegumo on Crushing Hand and murdersprite on Creeping Doom. Here are a few more based on mostly AD&D 1e spells:
- Fire Shield and Dancing Lights inspired Essences. These look like wil-o-wisps but are much more aggressive. They defend the forest's trees by tricking would be lumberjacks into attacking them. Unlike the spell, Essences harm those who strike them with both melee and ranged attacks. This does not apply to magic and they flee if harmed with spells.
- Move Earth inspired the Path Eater. These are mobile mounds that move and erase paths through the forest. They are hard to discern and harder to kill.
- Solid Fog inspired Congealed Miasma. It simply replicates the spell until slain. They are immune to physical attacks, so combat may be difficult for those trying to kill Congealed Miasma.
- Alter Self inspired Bait Beasts. These are cute and innocent looking (kids and animals) and lure people deeper into the forest. If caught, they gor spines and fangs before attacking.
- Glyph of Warding inspired Black Fire Glyphs. These are flying Chaotic writings that stick to the deeper groves, killing any invaders. They are creations of bakegumo and only appear after the third bloom.
- Suggestion inspired whisper imps. These hideous, and invisible, creatures encourage mortals to go down dark paths.
- Transmute Metal to Wood inspired Spiny Thickets. These are plant monsters that turn metal to spores.
- Snare is a bit different. Formerly safe objects become traps.
- Face (OA) inspired the Forest Ruler. This is not a unique individual, but rather a rare group of creatures that play on the humanoid's predaliction towards hierarchy. When a Ruler is encountered, the mortals must save or consider it their leader and do as it says as long as the commands sound reasonable.
- Illusionary Feast (3e Spell Compendium)- Everhunger are large, fleshy creatures that lure mortals deeper into the forest by turning themselves into the most delicious food. Those actually eating the flesh of an Everhunger may be corrupted (i.e. become Chaotic) and a servant of the Forest.
