Magic Items
Magic Items posted in Fantasy and Progress Level 3 forum comment posted by derek_holland I mentioned the idea of magic items that change form using D&D 5e style attunement slots in the generic idea thread and think it deserves a deeper examination.
First, in Alternity I would have such items temporarily drain ability points, those opposed to the theme of the item (so an item related to Strength may take Dexterity or Intelligence points). Take back the points and the item returns to its original form and powers.
The items are usually made with a planned series of forms. A dagger that turns into a sword, then turns into a suit of armor, and finally a steel horse with 1 to 3 points invested. This isn't always the case, chaos magic that affected the enchantment process may add forms the creator does know of.
Another possibility is something more like a Swiss Army knife. A dagger that becomes a sword with 1 point of Will, a shield with 1 point of Constitution, a bicycle with 1 point of Personality, and a wand with 1 point of Strength. More points make those new forms more elaborate and add or enhance powers.
What might replace ability scores? I was considering durability as well, but those points are not abundant in this game.
