Adding to the Fantastic Division
Adding to the Fantastic Division posted in Tangents forum comment posted by derek_holland I recently bought a book of fantasy art and it inspired most of these ideas:
- Furniture is hunted and stuffed. The animals' skeletons provide the perfect frames and degrade at the same speed of wood.
- Clothing is the hides of livestock (which may or may not regenerate). New fashions are the result of careful breeding.
- All vehicles are simulacra made from snow. They are made in late Autumn and last until early Summer. The rest of the year the people do without.
- Fallen Autumnal leaves are used to make Winter housing. These settlements are distant from the longer-lasting structures used the rest of the year.
- The ecology of cloud creatures (i.e. those made of vapors) does not interact with the foodwebs above or below. In fact most people simply ignore the actions occurring above their heads.
- Fire must be supplicated lest it escape in the form of flame moths.
- There is a single source of light, be it ball lightning, a glowing mineral, glowing insects, people of specific bloodlines, or something weirder. Light sources from other realities fail here.
- All plants have snail shells and can withdraw into them when harmed.
- Worlds with multiple continents where each has a different scale of size. This is so extreme that communication without FX is impossible. And there are no attempts are colonizing each other as those born on another continent are of its scale.
- People use fungi to repurpose objects, transforming them chemically and mystically. Breeding new strains is difficult and so new designs are rare.
- Wizard towers are alicorns and placed on various animals to make unicorn variants. As the animals are human scale, the wizards must be able to shrink themselves and their stuff/servants.
- Buildings are dredged from the ocean flood and hauled overland on the backs of behemoths (or elephants for the smallest ones).
- Buildings are the enlarged corpses of people who willingly die for the transformation. Their faces appear in many places inside and out to remind the living of who the building was.
- Everyone, including visitors from other realities, look identical except for their shadows.
- Bees collect knowledge from intelligent flowers and make books for a living.
- Seasons are due to continental configuration. When the season passes, the world moves and life at sea becomes hazardous for a few days.
- Tamed spirits reduce the number of vehicular crashes. They exist in the roads and so off road activities are much more dangerous as most people drive as if they were on a road.
- Beach surf causes objects to merge into useful mechanical things. They have replaced forges and many factories.
- Power plants are geothermal and exist near volcanoes. As the mountains are hot only half of the year, the people live without juice for the other half.
- Every native is reincarnated from selected animals. The would be parents pick a critter and have it sacrificed to ensure they know what the future child's personality will be like. The pregnancy is typical otherwise.
