About a decade or so ago I read a short story about a world where some of the people can turn themselves into buildings, roads, and other infrastructure. The change is permanent and until they were attacked by people from elsewhere that wanted to enslave and use them, this was done willingly and with pride.
Now consider finding a settlement of those people on Gamma Terra at war with say a city of arks. The building people can sacrifice themselves to overrun and destroy the arks' buildings, possibly destroying themselves in the process.
It would be a sad and awe inspiring thing to see from a distance.
