Szah-lah's Guide to Green (and once green) Things
Szah-lah's Guide to Green (and once green) Things posted in Gamma World forum comment posted by derek_holland Mom has several house plants in the basement under a grow light but not specially heated (so chilled, not frozen). Two of the new plants are potato vines* that are growing more vigorously now than during the summer. One is threatening to climb into the light while the other is going kudzu on the other plants.
And then there is the curly-leafed pondweed in the pond. This plant is infamous for growing during the winter and dying off in early summer. It is also a pest from Asia.
Which brings up the possibility, or likelihood, of plant guilds that grow in the cold or dry season on Gamma Terra. The world is never brown or grey, it is always green, purple or orange. When one guild drops its leaves or dies back, the other takes its place. Snow means the undergrowth will be less in the cold season but there will be some, esp those that avoid the ground as epiphytes growing on trees or buildings.
Farms can have two to three times as many harvesting seasons, the amount of wildlife will be increased by at least 75%, and colors like grey and brown for art and clothing may become more popular as they are rarer.
* Whatever that means, they aren't actually potatoes.
