I'd like to make something of the Pastry War in the Interbellum, though I don't see that we have a canonical set of nations that fits particularly well. |
The basics for such a conflict could be used in S*D during the Interbellum. I wouldn't recommend allowing them to follow beat-for-beat, but you just need to make it close enough. In this case, you need a powerful nation staging an intervention in a weaker one on behalf of its citizens. This would actually be a good setup for a homegrown colony in Open Space for a campaign, and help to explain how a corrupt government leader came back into power.
I can see two viable options that have some basis in setting canon.
Option 1: Use an Open Space single system government. It could have one primary world with a number of other planetary colonies (particularly jovian moons). This sort of colony could have been one of the last gasps of the Terran Empire, settled outside of the core stellar nations, and made independent as the result of GW1. Said colony had developed trade with a number of the stellar nations, but perhaps not one of the nearest (perhaps for political reasons).
A good example could be a system that is just outside of the borders of the Concord, near the Nariacs and Austrins. Such a colony could have trade relations with the various stellar nations there, but were not really interested in working with the Nariacs, even though the actual trade with them was not insignificant. Since Nariacs can't own property, a Nariac citizen gets mistreated and sparks an invasion of the system by the Domain. The conflict stays limited not only due to the amount of resources actually needed to take down a star system, but also because the Domain's neighbors (especially Austrin-Ontis and VoidCorp) would likely intervene
against the Nariacs if they push too hard.
Option 2: Perhaps it is a small stellar nation that isn't recognized by the Treaty of Earth. We do have precedent in the Orion League (formed by two recognized and one unrecognized nation during the Interbellum), so it isn't a huge leap to assume that there were (and maybe still are) unrecognized stellar nations in Open Space. Perhaps they aren't very big, controlling a dozen colonies over a handful of star systems, but they are actual multi-system governments.
The case with the Nariacs above works here, too, but you could place it somewhere else.
