Locations of Gamma Terra posted in Gamma World forum comment posted by derek_holland I have mentioned chessboard or patchwork settings before but never came up with a reason for them. One possibility was the Ancients' reliance on force screens for defense. New weapons were designed to defeat them and so new styles of shields were invented. It got so diverse that when the Cataclysm struck, the places in the fields suffered different effects. That could have reached beyond them as well as the energy leaking out of the screens would have increased just as they failed.
Mapping this should be easy- circles or pairs of circles dotting the planet. When the heroes first approach one, roll on a table of weird localized effects and mark it down on the map or main campaign sheets.
