Here are some ideas for monstrous books and then some gremlins that shapeshifting into objects.
Many monstrous books charm those who read them and then transform into something monstrous. Here are a few ideas on what they actually do to their victims:
- Add them as illustrations or text to the pages.
- Turn them into books containing their memories or history.
- Turn them into origami monsters that make paper (possibly from non-wood materials).
- Replace them with characters or creatures from their pages.
- Transport them to a reality that is identical to the contents of the book.
These gremlins are lazy and very effective- they become things and allow people to use them, spreading their curses and making the people think it is their fault. Or you could use these as cursed objects, the end result is the same.
Those that take the shape of tools and curse the objects and machines they are used on is the classic. These objects may backfire, fall apart or even do something completely different and still harmful.
The gremlins that take the forms of writing implements drain their users to turn what is written into a curse. It can be a curse on the things in the text or turns the text into an incantation so that every time it is read aloud, the curse is unleashed.
Gardeners fear gremlins that become watering cans or hoes. Everything they touch becomes cursed. Failing crops and flowers are the simple curse. More complex ones pass the curse on to those who consume the crops or turn the plants into monsters.
One gremlin that may actually be desirable to a certain segment of the population takes the form of a shovel. Whenever and wherever is is used, it digs up horrors- cursed items, monsters, portals to hellscapes, bodies of loved ones that have been replaced by doppelgangers, ancient ruins full of dangers, and so much more.
I really like that last one, it is a semi-random source of adventure and could be the basis of a horror anthology series or film.
