Barrier Peaks
Barrier Peaks (modifications and general thoughts) posted in Fantasy and Progress Level 3 forum comment posted by derek_holland Now that I have the 5e bestiary that uses the periodic table of elements, I got to thinking about if there are any creatures in the ship that could be replaced and I came up with three ideas:
- The coatl and shedu groups are replaced by silicon and germanium. The art in the bestiary makes them insect-like, so they could be related critters that were captured by the crew. Though a few of the elements are stated to like advanced technology, only the silicon elemental has a trait that allows them to interact with it (by disrupting it).
- I do not like the idea of umber hulks burrowing through the hull, so they are replaced with sulfur (if I want a phase-shifting toxic critter) or cerium (if I want to leave flaming splinters in the heroes).
- The death drinker does not impress me. A rhenium elemental works better as it is difficult to kill, esp with the artifact weapons found aboard the ship.
I was also considering replacing the intellect devourer and mind flayer but there aren't any elementals that remotely fill those niches. Otherwise the inhabitants of the ships are alien flora and fauna (and robots) that work well as is.

And it also mentions blowing up the ship once the characters have explored it once or twice. Ehh, not a fan. If I were to do it, the result would be more than a hole in the ground. It would be a toxic, superscience dump ala Roadside Picnic and populated by alien ghosts and specters ala the Final Fantasy film. A vacation spot for no one. |
This is where the rest of the bestiary could come in handy, though the really high CR radioactive elementals are likely overkill. A CR 30 uranium elemental is going to kill everything in the region and that isn't cool. Rather, the ship's destruction causes transmutation and animation, awakening many new types of elementals to Oerth, the kinds that make alchemists and artificers swoon with delight.
