Creature Design Philosophy posted in Gamma World forum comment posted by derek_holland Sponges can reproduce sexually and with budding, producing something like a spore called a gemmule. Mutant sponges and other species that have gained the ability to create gemmules by horizontal gene transfer or genetic engineering could make up a significant amount of marine and freshwater biomass.
Ephemeral lakes and rivers could have a lot of life when they contain water as the gemmules develop into various flora and fauna. When the bodies dry out, the critters die and release seeds, eggs, spores, gemmules, etc. to ensure their descendants will be ready for the next wet period.
These can also be used for terrestrial species but there should be a environmental trigger for their development. Radiation levels is obvious- abundant life is a sign of low or high radiation levels would be a good way to design a location the heroes explore.
