I see them as each person stuffing down their own trauma and masking it in their own way. Their snide and sarcastic comments were individualized. It wasn't a one size fits all depiction. And different folks had different degrees of depression, Walker and Yelena's trauma was very different, affected them differently and was dealt with differently. It would have been really easy to just throw some trappings and images and lines throughout the movie and call it a day, but there are a lot of details and nuances. Yelena doesn't become an all knowing therapist with all the answers, she just tries to help as best she can.
The best writing for me was that in the middle of the Void sequence, she doesn't just grab Bob and drag him out of there, she says we can do it together, will you try. Your friends can't drag you out of the darkness, you have to try.
Also before he poofs (voids?) the first goon in the tower he says aren't you tired of fighting? Let me help you. He's basically given up and thinks that's what everyone needs to do. He feels the internal fight is too much, you can't win. In his own way he's still trying to help people. But he's all screwed up.
Yeah, I'm a bit obsessed with this movie right now, there are so many layers, so much depth and skill that went into all aspects of the making of this movie. Just on the "movie buff" level it's quality.
But yeah, I can definitely understand the entire spectrum of reactions to it.
