And who are the greatest foes for illithids? No, not gith, humans or drow. It is the sun gods and their followers. Mind flayers want to snuff the sun and the gods of that fire body are doing everything in their power to eradicate that thread.
Each red dragon is born along with a volcano (they emerge from the caldera) and when the beast dies, so does the volcanic activity.
Dwarves need stone. Those that have attempted to settle air, water and fire bodies in Wildspace without a source of stone wither and die. And so their ships have extra stone aboard just in case they are forced to land on such a world.
Elder tree leaves change color and shape if their population of elves are replaced by another elven subspecies or other sort of fey.
I was consider alternate origins for the rarer PC species and in the end, my favorite is self-modification*. In effect prestige races that allowed something to become a person. These may be objects, plants, animals, natural or magical phenomena and even stranger things. Most remain as they are but a few gain a spark and wish to become more and through force of will become people.
* The runner ups are reincarnation and xenogenesis.
