SD A&EG: Trauma Pack I
SD A&EG: Trauma Pack I posted in Equipment, Cybertech and Weapons forum comment posted by cobalt_phoenix I actually wouldn't worry too much about that onboard assist program, more because of how I interpret the
first aid skill.
Looking at the skill in the PHB, the first paragraph notes that it is focused on basic first aid techniques and equipment, and doesn't allow for the use of more advanced items like a medical gauntlet.
To me, the skill has more to do with applying splints, tourniquets, bandages/dressings, antiseptic creams, burn dressings, etc, as well as how to perform CPR, clearing airway obstructions, and other major techniques that would normally be performed immediately after being injured. So the intent is to prevent further injury and stabilize a patient, which is very similar to the first aid training I received in the military (we were far more focused on keeping someone alive long enough to get them to professional medical help, and less on actually treating injuries to allow for long-term healing; as an example, we trained to deal with a "sucking chest wound", where someone was shot in the chest and it penetrated a lung; we were taught to take a piece of plastic, place it over the wound, and then secure it with a bandage in a particular way, to allow the patient to breath and keep them alive long enough to get to an aid station).
The fact that other species requires special training to me can be interpreted as the differences in the various biological systems seen between species. The heart rate of the various species, for example, or unique characteristics of their circulatory system as an other. Those can be fairly important, especially if a technique or tool needs to be altered to allow for it to work and not cause more injury. Think about the difference between doing CPR on a human versus giving it to
a pet., and imagine instead trying to give CPR to a t'sa or a seshayan (which may have lighter, thinner bone structures, so breaking their ribs may be incredibly easy if you try to use the standard technique).
So considering what a trauma pack I is intended for, and the way the assist program is described. I can imagine that it is a guide system that includes data on a very large number of different intelligent species (all least all of the major species in the campaign, and any of the more widespread secondary ones), that can then walk a person through first aid steps for that particular species. You may need to select the specific species (or it could use sensors to detect it), and it then displays what you should be doing, along with vital data like heart rate, blood pressure, etc. It could ask for prompts about what is happening to the patient, and you can then tell it what you can see. From there, it just gives the information on how to perform first aid.
The actual materials carried in the trauma pack could be materials to promote clotting or a self-sealing material that forms a bandage that helps deal with chemical or regular burns, while also preventing blood loss, as well as items like smelling salts or chemical injections that counter the knock out condition.
Unfortunately, after reading the item description, I don't think we can really know what exactly it has in terms of medications and/or materials, so it is hard to tell if it can't be just general purpose for all species, or how complex they are.
