And that brings up another point, but one that has little impact on most species from Star Drive- all of the primary species live in Class 1 environments. The only one I can think of that doesn't is the Ravan (as they need the suits to survive in low pressure environments). Working with other species that do not may have a different set or effects for the Powers and Drawbacks. That makes my head hurt.
Overall, to make it easier the only classes that matter are 1-3 and so the artifact drawbacks emulate irritating 1 for Slight, harmful 2 for Moderate and deadly 3 for Extreme.
As for ranges and how long it takes for the effect to form and fade is all artifact dependent. Size matters not- remember the walnut-sized starship engines mentioned in the original Star Trek? It was in the episode with the energy beings stuck in basketball-sized spheres.
