Creature Design Philosophy posted in Gamma World forum comment posted by derek_holland Though varks are the official burrowing mammal species of GW there are other possibilities that could be allies or competitors. Chipmunks come to mind considering the holes in the gardens and lawn. They could be the small allies of varks, the diggers that are good at making new tunnels when the prior ones are attacked or invaded. As for a foe, a variant of the ark that descends from terriers, does not dig out vark holes but rather digs into the tunnels from elsewhere. They are easy to detect because of their life leech mutation- the varks feel woozy when the arks are close to breaking through.
And then there is the possibility of mutants from non-burrowing ancestors. Whales with head tentacles that allow them to churn through soil like massive wild hogs can make a real mess of vark (and badder for that matter) underground homes and mines. Massive megapodes that initially burrow and then mound build for their nests could rip up so much debris from a vark village that they may very well go elsewhere. Mutant humans that had adapted to deeply buried vaults and now are digging up since their food or water supply failed could be a surprise for the varks, almost everything comes from above. These humans will eat the varks' stores and maybe some of the sarbises as well if they are hungry enough. And they may not look very human anymore considering their adaptations to poor air, scant food and little light for many generations.
