I would start by roughly sketching what you are wanting to make with descriptive notes, and then you can try finding some item(s) to use as a base to build on. Toy aisles of Walmart, Target, pharmacies, etc, could yield cheap plastic parts you can paint and/or cut up for later gluing, and more parts can be found at hobby/craft stores (Michael's, maybe Hobby Lobby) and hardware stores*.
* Electrical conduits, PVC pipes, foam pipe insulation, rubber tubing, and other components, along with paints and epoxy/glues are all available at Ace, Home Depot, and others.
