Cut the hand off a goblin and try to polymorph it into a bear and you get a bear's paw. Cut a troll into little parts and each can become a whole bear. If the magic is dispelled, the bears revert into whole trolls. This is one way a wizard can create an army of regenerating monsters in a short amount of time. The problem thereafter is that all of the trolls think they are the same individual and that will cause infighting.
A side effect of trolls battling trolls is the blood. So much is split that it may be impossible to get the stains out ever. Blood feeding scavengers may be drawn centuries after the battle.
The Formless are misnamed as they were touched lightly by Chaos. Each of them has 1d4+1 forms selected out of a group of 40-50. They randomly change between the forms every 1d4 days. With the large number of possible forms, individuals of the same family may not have any that are the same. Unfortunately the name stuck and now ignorant people think they are shapeshifters/ooze monsters.
