| It should be straightforward to extend this to the crew members listed on page 42 of Warships. |
An
example from another game of, more or less, naval crew members from a capital ship led to some thoughts about crew divisions that I've mentioned here and there, probably not arriving at an entirely consistent model (if there ought to be complete consistency, across thirteen stellar nations, at least four starfaring species and at least several centuries of history, discounting
still earlier (and earlier than that) related ideas).
A "bridge crew" member might have the
space vehicle skill, regardless which of three or more careers she came from, as might a crew member of a different division from past experience or to handle
small craft (which might also usefully include air, ground or even occasionally water vehicles). If we need to know about
sub-specialisation, the determination probably has to be campaign-specific and perhaps not simple. Whatever breakdown a GM accepts, I might expect some differences, but also much overlap, between military and merchant shipping backgrounds, of which of course an experienced crew member might have both.
Likewise, merchant vessels have (canonically) weapons and (from my work) tractor beams and cable guns, which use the
weapons specialty, so I can't rule out that skill at all for a merchant spacer. edit:
Defences, though, might be more likely from military training, not necessarily space fleet.
