| In addition to a mindwipe, you may want to consider a fork offspring option- creating a new individual by duplicating one's mind and then editing to taste by removing bloat and potentially adding desired skills not found in the parent. |
That could be an interesting option, and would allow for basically high-level characters to be around that may feel like patriarchs/matriarchs for a large family (potentially thousands or more people, all related to them, including a few fork offspring).

| I forget which setting it is, but one has everyone with their own AI, called a muse, in their braincomp. Becoming a muse to help one's descendants, or anyone who can afford to buy the muse, has potential. |
That was already going to be in there. Basically an virtual assistant (not really a shadow, and it follows you between the real and virtual worlds).
In the real world, it could be loaded into a nanocomp, or carried in computer gauntlet, or some other computer.
In the virtual world, it would be attached to the person's mind, and could be heavily customized. It could look like a Ioun Stone, or a magical familiar, or some sort of technological device. It could also not appear at all, being something like Cortana loaded into a suit of armor.
It would act as an intelligent assistant, and would be vital in the MB. It would primarily manage your "gear" in there.*
* My thoughts on how to handle virtual gear was to treat them like apps. An uploaded mind would be limited to a number of apps, with not much in the way of actual active size limits, but they would also have an inventory system that held inactive apps. I was thinking this could work like the inventory system normally seen in video games like Mass Effect 1, Neverwinter Nights, etc.
That gives options for people to have dedicated "pages" in their inventory (a page for clothing/armor, a page for weapons, a page for gadgets, etc) that each have size limits (so you may be able to carry, perhaps, 4 or 5 suits of either armor or clothing, as an example). Characters can access their inventory whenever they wish, but it doesn't stop the virtual world to do so, so there would be time requirements on swapping. The bigger the item swap, the longer it takes, but it would allow for characters to do quite a lot. Additional apps can be stored at home, too.
And yes, I was thinking that there would be homes within the MB. Of course, since it is digital, the space you are paying for is very much more about how much data it takes up, but you can manipulate it however you wish. So you may walk down a hallway in a virtual apartment building, with the doors crammed tightly together, but opening the doors could reveal a massive space that looks nothing like what should be able to fit in the physical space of the building. Since an uploaded mind doesn't need food, drink, or even really sleep, you can set up the home to have whatever appearance you may like. "Resting" could just be that you are not really doing anything at that point, so your data usage is down.
It could be a lot of fun, I think, but it is also going to be a royal pain to set up and develop the rules for it.
