Using mutants for different settings
Using mutants for different settings posted in Species, Aliens, Xenoforms & Monsters forum comment posted by derek_holland Spoilers for Steven Utley's "The Country Doctor". I suggest that you find and read this short story, I found it in The Weird.
The viewpoint character returns to his hometown just before it is flooded as a new reservoir and find some archeologists digging up his relatives from many decades prior. They find a number have extreme bone deformities, the character himself and his kids/grandkids likely suffer from these.
Then they dig up the doctor's grave and find something very odd, a non-human skeleton with prosthetics used to make him appear human.
Turns out he was there to hide or help and something he did in his practice mutated the entire small town. The character thinks it was an accident, a side effect of the alien's chemistry or biology.
Adding cosmetic or physical defects from alien surgery is a great seed for a setting like Dark Matter. The aliens helped but also left something horrible for future generations.
