Heckler and Koch MP7
Heckler and Koch MP7 posted in Equipment, Cybertech and Weapons forum comment posted by uncle_jimbo More recently than the
Dark.Matter Arms and Equipment Guide in 2000, this
personal defence weapon, in later versions bulked up again to a more conventional SMG role, builds around a novel type of ammunition, something like the FN P90 (which doesn't work well with the site search, but I think we've discussed, if it wasn't only in d20-land), a 4.6 x 30mm high-velocity steel-cored bullet.
The result apparently has slightly less muzzle energy than a 9mm pistol round, but is inherently armour-piercing. Use the rule for this effect supported in your campaign, either halving an Ordinary-toughness target's armour value (as per
D.M A&EG) or subtracting 1 from the armour value - if using my preferred treatment, which gives a bit more flexibility, I'd prefer to reduce the effect of this relatively low-powered attack compared to AP rifle rounds, for which a reduction of 2 points was raised before. Also, the lighter ammunition seems to help to fit more shots in a magazine, with a standard 20 rounds or extended 40 rounds.
Hollow-point or fragmenting rounds use the same calibre with more emphasis on damage.
Unlike FN, the manufacturer decided not to produce a pistol using this ammunition.
Like the P90, I'd be wary of making it a fan-favourite superweapon or new era (Progress Level) of guns. It's relatively low-powered, expensive and not at all angled towards civilian sales. I'd guess its range is OK but not spectacular. It's an interesting line of development and seems to have become fairly popular, with at least some use by a variety of special forces, police special tactics units and (where I came across it) the Swiss Guard.
