Thundarr style wizards
Thundarr style wizards posted in Gamma World forum comment posted by derek_holland Here is how I would design wizards such as the council of villains in Thundarr.
Pick a theme for each and then develop one offensive, two defensive and five utility powers related to those themes. These powers are those that the wizard can use without reliance on tools and implements. With tools, they can use their FX points to cast even more spells within their themes.
A few examples:
- Healing: Necrosis inflicts Wound and Mortal damage; Regeneration heals wounds, Armored Skin provides enhanced armor versus low and high impact damage; Sustenance removes the need for food and water, Long Life removes penalties for aging (it does not actually increase the lifespan), Power Nap provides eight hours of rest in ten minutes, Stasis slows aging as well as other typical effects, and Fecundity triples the reproduction rate of those affecting (including plants).
- Wealth: Coin Blast buries foes as well as inflicting damage; Coin Wall blocks line of sight as well as takes damage in place of the wizard, Bribe probes the mind of the target and creates an item that they will likely take and leave the wizard alone (though its value is subtracted from the wizard's personal wealth); Shiny increases the value of an object, Corrode decreases the value of an object and damages it, Meme Creation allows the wizard to control their image and perform character assassination of foes, Detect Value only reveals the value of things the wizard finds important, Cut Corners applies to the wizard's own creations by decreases costs by 50% and increasing the chances of a Critical Failure with them by one (i.e. on a 19 or 20 roll).
- Color: Isolation inflicts images and phantom sounds on the target that replace all they see and hear; Duplicates is mirror image, Poor Range screws with the target's sight and inflicts a penalty to their attack rolls (melee and ranged), Patterns changes the appearance of objects, Detection is used when the desired item(s) have a known and specific hue, Camo hides the wizard, Teaching Assistant provides an environment where learning is easier.
