At some point it is possible that ship systems will be integrated throughout the hull. There is no engineering, life support, cargo holds, etc. section because the entire ship performs those tasks. The only thing I can think of that likely will not is the quarters, at least until people don't care about that sort of thing anymore and rest wherever they please.
What PL do you think that would happen? |
Well, there are problems with that concept. The reality is that a lot of systems do better when centralized. Cargo, for example, would be better in a cargo area than just stacked in the various spaces around the ship.
However, there are some systems that could do well in a distributed system. Sensor technology, for example, would do well if distributed across the entire hull, providing a significantly larger aperture for said sensors (the larger the aperture, the more information taken in, the better the resolution and range). Computer technology could easily be distributed as a network of smaller linked computers scattered everywhere.
Crew quarters are a bit of an issue, though. That wouldn't require technology necessarily, but societal norms being changed so people really don't value privacy in their lives. Which would be a problem for likely every species.
As for when that could happen, it would depend. Warships has symbiotic hull as being at PL8, but various other systems could be introduced as early as PL5 (for EM based sensors, such as the EM detector) or PL6 (most sensors could probably be small enough to be widely distributed, including radar, using similar technology to the real AESA radar, which has a large number of individual transmitter/receiver elements, and can be used for communications). Computers could also be likely be seen in a distributed network at PL6, if not earlier.
