Resources for a horror-themed Paranoia campaign?I recently realized I own the
Paranoia 2nd edition and thumbed through it. It was sufficiently intriguing to make me want to referee a campaign. (In fact, I feel doing so is mandatory.)
I know
Paranoia is generally marketed and played as a comedy game, and I agree there is plenty of potential for morbid humor and dark satire. However, I didn't find the setting particularly laughable -- it was frightening above anything else. The players live in a subterranean complex that's all but out of order; they are constantly supervised by an omnipresent and omnipotent computer; no one is honest and all are incredibly selfish; people die all the time for no reason; yet everybody must pretend they are as happy as one can be.
If that's not hell I don't know what is.
My understanding is that the newer editions offer support for a more serious playstyle. I actually ordered the
W.M.D. sourcebook, although it hasn't arrived yet.
I'm not completely going to forget about the comedy, but I think that both terror and humor work best when they balance each other.
Do you have any tips or resources for a relatively serious, horror-themed
Paranoia campaign? It would probably be some kind of a conspiracy thriller, with occasional outbursts of absurdity. Kafkaesque if you will. Have you participated in such campaigns yourself? What sort of adventures did you have?
