Adventure Ideas posted in Gamma World forum comment posted by derek_holland The heroes take several bundles of what appear to be duralloy rods out of a buried ruin and deliver them to their home settlement. The rods are stored in a warehouse next to a solar powered generator under a skylight.
They aren't duralloy, nor are they metal rods. They are a ceramic composite with a heavy glaze that mimics metal and they are made of programmable matter. The power leaking from the generator is activating one of their functions- reform into cage traps. Anyone that touches one of the rods find themselves in a cage just large enough to turn around in. The material is immune to most types of energy and using a conversion beamer (anti-matter gun) is usually bad for whoever is in the cage. Worse, when the sun sets, the cage reverts to a rod and the person inside is left as a pile of bits.
These will make excellent traps for the future but the problem is now- one of the heroes family members is in a cage and there is only 9 hours until it reverts (not that the heroes or players know that).
The only way to free the SCM is to use a different signal, one that will cause the cage to open. I am not going to provide ideas, other than it should be something the heroes have access to but also incurs some sort of price (which could be simply paying a sage to do the research).
