The blood lines in the 3.5 Unearthed Arcana could be the origins of some monsters instead of their descendants. The rules are used for people who are cursed and some of their offspring become the monster once they reach adulthood.
A flaw for sorcerers is the spontaneous generation of monsters within their vicinity. This could be a spell botch or the result of any spell being caster over X level (I would go with levels 6-9, but I like diverse monster ecosystems.)
A variant spell book is two or more inscribed mirrors. The caster sets them up so that they reflect each other at various angles, changing the shapes of the sigils.
Tricks are found within the 1e DMG and Tome of Adventure Design (the latter has around 30 pages devoted to them). A possible origins for them is Chaos, be it spells or godlings. As the chaos casting PC does their thing, the number of tricks and traps in the dungeon they are exploring increase...
Entanglements* could be used to design strange ecosystems. Use one of the more complex charts and write the names of different species instead of individuals or factions and then the types of relationships. And then change the creatures to fit those relationships. What would be different about darkmantles that are scavengers that prefer small mammals as prey (such as many familiars)? Or what if they become the base of the food chain and feed directly one magic, heat, minds or some other source of energy?
* Best charts I have found:
