Thunderbolts* is now on D+ and is okay. It tries way too hard to emulate Suicide Squad and many of the jokes fell flat to me. At best it simply advances the storyline and prepares the characters for the next Avengers flick. |
I guess it's what you are looking for in the movie. I expected a superhero flick, maybe a bit grittier than most. What I got is the most accurate and deeply moving portrayal of bipolar disorder and depression I've ever seen on film. And cool superhero fights.
I have bipolar disorder and seeing folks literally trapped in destructive recurring thoughts/ memories really hit me. Seeing broken folks dealing or not dealing with their issues and still being the heroes they didn't want to be or felt they could be gave me hope that the Superman film decidedly did not.
The acting, cinematography, score, pacing and subtle metaphors were well above expectations for any drama, let alone a Marvel movie. In the Void, Yelena looks in the mirror and sees Bob, not a direct reflection of her, but he's there. In the final scene while in the Void, when Bob fights back the Void dolly shot pushes away his support structure and they aren't strong enough to fight back, and he's not strong enough to let them. The film delivers emotion, then humor, then emotion with excellent pacing. The jokes aren't forced, they flow naturally from the characters and situations, and they're funny but don't break the mood.
Things like "I'm fine" spoken by folks who decidedly weren't fine was great. It addressed suicidal ideation without saying anything directly. Almost every time we see Yelena close her eyes she's accepting, almost welcoming death. John Walker relives a memory, finds himself on the edge of a literal precipice and says "I'm fine". They joke, they deflect, they wear psychological masks to hide from others and themselves.
After they pull Bob back from beating himself up he says "I'm fine" and his smile shows that he genuinely is. At the end he can't be the Sentry without the Void, but he can be Bob, and he's well enough to do the dishes. Having suffered major depressive episodes I can say that sometime doing dishes is a victory.
Anyhow, that's my take, Thanks for attending my Ted Talk.
