Creature Design Philosophy
Creature Design Philosophy posted in Gamma World forum comment posted by derek_holland Uplifts that were given the ability to tinker with their own genomes resulted in many species that survived the Cataclysm because they could adapt to the conditions then and thereafter. A few examples:
- A sessile fungus that uses power suits (most use hard e-suit stats) to move, manipulate objects and interact with other species. The fungus does not have a language that can be understood by most others and so only with the suit can they communicate with the great community. Though most of the original suits have long since failed, the fungus does know how to make effective replacements from either other power suits or from junk. The latter are weaker but much more abundant in their territory. Being able to manipulate their own genes, the fungus creates useful chemicals and foodstuffs to trade with others. Seeing one of the suits open and what appear to be apples rolling out is an unusual experience in the wastes for sure.
- Tortoises that modify their shells to be sensors, storage, specialized defense, ornamentation, communication, etc. They are also faster than their ancestors and either add photosynthesis to their shells or have an omnivorous diet.
- Going back to the idea from a couple posts up thread, 2m long caterpillars that modify their adult stages for a variety of uses. They are more likely guard beasts or simple mechanics than scholars and diplomats.
