| that is a good idea, but I would have it as a genetic change. There is no reason to modify a user's genome when other sorts of biotech can work just as well (and not create mutant children from long term users). The addition or modification of tissues shouldn't be that difficult in PL 7+ as long as there is either a tank of organic fluids or access to an carbon rich environment. Losing the mods would take significant surgery and some former users may want to keep one or more of them- marks of their former career in the military or other organization. |
A valid point, though I always wonder how a piece of tech can actually pull off what it does. That's one reason why I went with the idea of genetic mutations.
I could see a suit of powered armor having some kind of bonding system that is activated the first time it is worn. The bonding could include injecting the user with nanites that have a very short communication range, to the point that it requires the user to have the armor on to actually use them. From there, the nanites could be directed to gradually alter the wearer.
In the case of some alien or ancient suit, the current users may not actually know this is being done. They may find some kind of writing saying how the suit makes its wearer even more powerful over time and not realize that means mutations.
This also gives the potential that the armor was developed by a specific group that relied on specific genetic tags. For those with the tags, the mutations are more targeted with fewer drawbacks. For those without, the drawbacks are increased and the mutations are more broad or random. The result is a potential ancient lineage, with the actual specific reasons for it lost to time.

| Has anyone mentioned body tanks that join or merge with a larger vehicle? Something like the Cyclone (I think that's what they were called) motorcycle mecha in the third Robotech series. The motorcycle is just a motorcycle with an exotic power source without the suit / armor / body tank, but with it, and some appropriate training for the user the combo becomes a lethal and extremely agile presence on the battle field. |
I actually kind of did, yes, though I think the implications were glossed over.
Powered exoskeletons that provide boosts to the wearer so they can handle higher g-forces would be great for pilots. It could also be used to piggyback cybernetic vehicle connections and life support equipment. The result is a suit that fully plugs into something like an aircraft or spacecraft and keeps the crew alive, awake, and functional during operations (especially for military vehicles, and especially if you want to take a harder edge to space travel).
