It's certainly fiction, as far as I know no older than this book, but I'll see if there's anything promising. I've mentioned some of their pastiche in this line elsewhere.

State of Preservation

It might work well for the heroes to represent the Concord (a somewhat predictable motive) as independent contractors (limited coercive authority). We know the Concord Survey Service often works that way.

"As the lasers settle into whatever course they decide to pursue, a fresh complication arises. Ships of an obscure people, the Jeropus, descend on the scene..."

It seems several of the crew don't have computer operation, which is trained only. Mejia and Heinz can Teach this, starting with Rose and Cochrane. Languages also seem a reasonable thing to Teach, but there aren't obvious gaps.

I don't think I've posted on this to the full extent I've started thinking about it, but a post elsewhere might supply some prompts for a few areas, starting with:

Depending on your Transfer Rating, everyone on board will have a certain number of Downtime Actions at their disposal. These work in the exact same way as Shore Leave Actions (i.e. they can be used to train Skills, get medical care, work on a project etc.) with one exception: they cannot be used to relieve Stress.

If you want to spend your downtime on something that requires access to outside information, you may run into the problem of interplanetary bandwith limits. Response might be slow, the trickle of data across the radio even slower. If your Transfer Rating is higher than 3, requesting files from the outside becomes a separate Downtime Action.

A starfall might provide one period of downtime and campaign considerations might suggest whether it should impose stress.

I have a likely future use for some equivalent of xixchil, who sound a bit like tothul in several ways. There's no reason they couldn't be a subculture or organisation mostly from the species. edit: It's a good excuse to read back through some files from Nostack's Schismatrix Plus campaign.

Insight, Orlamu and Humanity Reformation can all be bad guys.

So the opposition includes Mindwalkers, weren in clerical stoles, weird shut-in hackers and, if they have a prototype online, maybe an actual wizard, who I'll be sure not to name anything resembling Carl Stanford.
