Not paying will result in natural disasters. Some cultures have gods that will prevent these but only to a point as the nature spirits can also create supernatural disasters that are much harder to prevent or stop.
Giant horse flies can gain a single supernatural power from the creatures they feed on. Once the blood has been digested, the power fades.
A living world is covered with forests of neural cells. Its grey cell treants have psychic powers and the ability to animate white cell masses.
Some supernatural monsters can spawn other creatures if they are subjected to Dispel Magic. The power they lost becomes the other critter. Once the effect ends, the power monster vanishes and the progenitor regains the power.
Oozes, mimics, and similar creatures could be used as monster larvae. When the ooze splits because of growth, one half is ooze and the other is a small adult, which then will grow to full size over time.
